Why blogging helps SEO

When i went back to college for semester two of third year i did a module called Digital Marketing. I was surprised to find out that as part of this module we would be blogging. At first i thought this was a joke because i thought blogging was gone long past its sell by date??…. I was clearly wrong.

I went up to Google’s European headquarters in Dublin recently and they told us that content is king and they described the process of SEO in detail, which included blogging. After doing further research into this and by attending my digital marketing lectures in college i found out why blogging is so useful and also how it helps with SEO. After trawling through the internet i have found countless people arguing about how Google are constantly changing what’s important in order to rank highly in terms of SEO.

Fresh content

We all know that content is king. But what a lot of people don’t know is that fresh content is a lot more valuable than old content. The reason being is because search engines pull the most relevant and up-to-date content when a search is preformed by someone. A lot of websites don’t update their website content often and a great way to do this is through blogging. By linking your blog to your website it will deliver up-to-date, relevant content which will increase your SEO ranking. Also you are providing new content for Google to index and most importantly you are building up a relationship with your readers which is vital. Click here ¬†for a very interesting article titled “How fresh content can influence ranking”. In this article it goes through 10 illustrations to help you understand how important fresh content is.

In case you are confused about SEO or if you want to know more about SEO then i would highly recommend you watching the video below ūüôā

Images & Videos

Images and videos are a great tool to have in your blogs which will help make your content more reader friendly, but it will also help improve your SEO.  Make sure you name them according to the search terms or keywords, and then do the same for the alt-text.
Including pictures and videos is another good way to improve your SEO and for Google to be able to find you. Also by including images and videos it will help make your content more unique and help it stand out, all of which Google love and it will help you improve your SEO ranking once its done correctly.

A very interesting article that i found on this topic is titled “How video marketing creates immediate SEO results”. Click here if you would like to read this article. This article goes through in detail how video and images create immediate SEO results.

Once you have targeted the most relevant keywords that you feel will be most valuable to you and your content it is now time to know what to do with them. It is important to place them where they will have the most impact for your readers and search engine crawlers indexing your content. In simple terms by making blogs and by including keywords about your content that you feel people will search for, it will help improve your SEO overall which is vital. A few years ago keywords were extremely important but nowadays they don’t hold as much weight as they used to but they still are important. I bet a lot of you are wondering how the hell are we supposed to know what people are typing in their search engines, we aren’t able to read peoples minds??… Well thankfully we don’t have to have any magic powers to find this out and with this very useful article titled “How to do keyword research for SEO” it will help you understand how this is done and if you would like to read this article then click here.

I certainly was wrong when i thought that blogging was a thing of the past. In my opinion, in order to stay ahead in terms of SEO search results you need to be blogging at a regular basis to produce fresh, relevant content that your audience want to read.

Top 5 tips for creating great Facebook content

Have you ever looked on Facebook and wondered why your friend or business rival is getting a lot more likes and shares on their Facebook Content than you?? I certainly have so I decided to do some research to help both you and I by providing 5 valuable tips to help you create great Facebook content. They are as follows:

1. Stay Engaged

It is vital to stayed engaged with your audience. People¬†lose lots of their¬†page likes ¬†if they don’t engage with their audience so this is key. I have read a very interesting article which is called “8 ways to improve your Facebook engagement”. This really does cover all that you need to know about staying engaged with your audience and if you would like to read this article then click here.¬†This article gives you a step by step guide to ensure that you stay on top of your Facebook content.

2. Map your content

This is a vital step in creating¬†great Facebook content. Mapping your content will ensure that you stay organised with your content and it will also ensure that you don’t just put up pointless content for the sake of it. A great way to map your content is by going online and taking note of all the upcoming things that are related to your target audience. This will make your life a lot easier and it will help you create great Facebook content because you will have the content pre-researched and it will be presented to your audience at te right time. An article I found online titled ” 5 steps to mind map your content and increase its reach” talks about how you map your content and why its important and if you would¬† like to read this article click here.

3. Create  a call to action

Using Facebook for your business is a great way to establish brand awareness and loyalty. But how can you keep your social followers engaged and encourage them to take action with your brand?

This is another great way to improve your Facebook content and to make it more effective. Designed to bring a business‚Äôs most important objective to the forefront of its Facebook presence, call-to-action buttons link to any destination on or off Facebook that aligns with a business‚Äôs goals call to action. A nice little article that I found useful was “How to engage social followers using Facebook’s new call to action button”. If you would like to read this article then click here.¬† I liked this article because unlike other articles about creating a call to action, this one is simple to understand and I feel it would benefit ye the most.

4. Test your create to see what works

This is certainly the one that people are most afraid to do but if done correctly it will certainly benefit your content a lot!! In order to create great Facebook content you have to stand out and not just be boring like a lot of the Facebook content. A good example of a company that took this risk was Paddy Power and they have perfected their Facebook content to make it humorous and risky all of which make it great Facebook content. I really recommend that you try to be innovative and try to use your content in different ways on Facebook and see what your audience like and don’t like.

To see how your content’s doing, use the Page Insights at the top of your Page. Insights are great because they help you understand what content your audience like but also they help you see who your audience actually are.  This page insights tab if used correctly can be a very useful tool to help monitor your Facebook content. If you would like to read an article of some people that have tried and tested their content to see what worked for them then click here.

5. Pick what resonates

I was surprised to find out that Almost 30 million pieces of content are shared online each and every day. And to be honest, much of it is a load of pointless information. I found a very interesting article to help give you a more detailed insight into picking content that resonates with your Facebook audience, click here if you would like to give it a read.

If you look up the word resonates in a dictionary it will say ¬†“produce or be filled with a deep, full, reverberating sound” and this is certainly what you are going to try and do to help you created great Facebook content. You need to ensure you hit home with what content your audience find most interesting to read and build your content around that. In a nutshell its basically finding what your audience want and being able to give it to them at a regular basis.

The future of social media is mobile

Technology is constantly changing. Gone are the days were we used be glued to those big old dusty¬†computer screens trying to see who “Shared the love” on Bebo with you. Even when social media sites such as Facebook came out first people had very limited access to their page unless they were at home on their¬†sluggish computer or in my case¬†the local library (Which seems funny looking back on it now).¬† Social media has definitely been the catalyst in creating such amazing phones like the ones ¬†that we have today. It actually shocks me to see children as young as seven years of age walking around with phones worth over ‚ā¨600!! (I mean come on they barely even know how to spell their names never mind being able to use an advanced piece of technology). Click here for an article that I found to be very interesting in relation to this topic. The article shows us just how much social media has changed and that everyone has different needs and the social landscape is shifting accordingly.

Nowadays, people are obsessed¬†with telling the world what they are doing. As a third level student¬†who is on all major¬†social media sites, I am constantly bombarded with (In my opinion “irrelevant”)¬†Snapchats¬†of peoples dogs, people on Instagram posting pictures of their dinners, on Twitter of people tweeting about what they do every second of every day!! Oh and of course we cant forget about Facebook where people feel its necessary ¬†to put up statuses and post pictures of their “Fake” lives. In my opinion it has all¬†been because of the huge craze that¬†social media has created on mobile devices. I’ve read an article recently and I was amazed at how far social media on mobile devices has become already. There is currently 1.79 billion social network users worldwide!! Also it has been calculated that monthly minutes on Facebook through the US alone is a staggering 114.28 billion. Click here to see this article¬†which is also filled with many other very interesting figures and statistics.

Below is a very interesting video about the revolution of social media in 2015. It shows us how fast technology and specifically social media has grown in such a short space of time. I would highly recommend that you watch it.

People are now moving away from sitting down at a computer looking through their social media sites. Everything is on the go these days. Social media and¬† technology are ruthless. Just like your news feed on Facebook, social media and mobile devices are constantly being updated and the old stuff (When I say old it may only be a few months old) is thrown away and forgotten about. I was recently in Dublin in Google’s European headquarters and their head of sales was telling me about how important mobile devices¬†have become¬†in all aspects of life. He was telling me that¬†in a few years he can see normal computers being irrelevant and everything will¬†be either on mobile or¬†tablet. ¬†The total population globally is 7.2 billion people. There is currently 1.685 billion active mobile ¬†social accounts which means there is 23% penetration.

Another interesting article that I’ve read “11 predictions on the future of social media on mobile” shows us that there is currently 1.3 billion active Facebook users, Twitter boosts 270 million active users, each day 4 billion videos are watched on YouTube and 60 million photos are uploaded on Instagram. In this article also, they ask a few industry experts¬† their predications on the future of social media and they give some interesting responses.¬† I found the picture below to be very true in summing up what¬† mobile social media has turned people into.

Another article that I found to be very useful when looking into the whole topic of ” The future of social media is mobile” was titled ” Why smartphones are the future of social media” and you can find this article by clicking here. In this article it shows us that both Facebook and Twitter were accessed for longer on mobile instead of the old fashioned standard computer.¬† A report on this article also shows us that Apps drive the majority of engagement on mobile devices.

Overall in my opinion I feel strongly that the future of social media is mobile and the vast majority of stats online will back up my point. Everyone is getting more educated with technology and with the growing incomes of households etc nearly everyone can afford a smart phone. Also because of the improving quality of Wi-Fi connection more and more people are able to¬†access their social media accounts 24/7. With the increasing¬†pressures¬†to update your social media statuses constantly (Which in a way seems¬†ridicules ) ¬†and with the constant updates on all forms of social media it is making people want to have all of this updated information with them at all times in order to keep up to date with the latest news. It really does pave the way for mobile devices to satisfy those needs so in my opinion ” The future of social media is mobile”.

My App Idea

As part of our digital marketing module in college, we were asked to enter an App into the Apprentice competition which was going to happen around innovation week in the college. At first we were kind of overwhelmed at the thought of having to come up with an idea which had the potential to win but after a lot of trial and error we finally decided on what App we thought had the most potential.

My App idea is called the “Student Saver” App.¬†A group of four CIT students ( Brian Bullman, Shane Connolly, Kevin Wyse and Sadie Buckley) came up with the idea for this App to enter into the APPrentice competition which was to take place in the Cork Institute of Technology.¬†The image below shows the top section of the entry page for the APPrentice competition.

Our idea for this App was as follows: Students love offers/ deals and because students aren’t usually brand loyal we thought that this would be a great way to both help the shops/restaurants and also¬†other local companies within close proximity to CIT to enhance their sales by being able to inform the CIT students of these offers/deals and upcoming events. It would also benefit students because this App would help them become more aware of where to get the best prices for the products and services that they need, So in truth everyone wins. The picture below shows a standard smart device which our App can be downloaded onto from the App store.

When students spend money in any of the shops or restaurants in CIT they will accumulate points. For every euro the student spends they get 1 point. Once they reach 100 points they will get a ‚ā¨5 voucher to spend in any of the shops/restaurants in CIT. They will be able to receive these points by scanning the receipts bar codes after they purchase their products. On this App also there will be a home page where students will be informed of the latest offers/deals in the CIT shops and restaurants which will be updated weekly. Also other local shops/restaurants/ bars etc can pay us to advertise their offers/deals and upcoming events on the App¬†t0o. We believe that this App will be very appealing for them because we will be predominately focusing on their target market which is college students.

At the beginning this App will be exclusively in CIT but once it gets going and starts to expand we will be looking into introducing it into other colleges such as UCC . We believe that this App has huge potential and it could expand into a lot of places such as other colleges, sporting clubs etc. The video below shows the top 20 Apps of 2015 and it will give you a very clear idea of how important innovation and Apps have become in recent times.¬†It is very important to note that every business should have an App in order to ensure that they don’t fall behind their competitors.

An interesting¬†article¬†that I have read¬†backs up the point that Apps really are the way forward and the majority of people now use their mobiles to access stuff online and this is mainly through Apps, “89% of their time spent on media is through online Apps” (Bosomworth, 2015). This article also shows a lot of very interesting statistics on Apps and all the statistics really back up the point that everyone is turning to Apps these days and in order to get the consumers that they need and want it is very important to have an App for their product/services.

Another reason why we thought this App would be a good idea is because there is a huge potential target audience for this App once it expands outside CIT. A very interesting article that I read shows that in 2009 full-time undergraduates in Ireland was over 110,000 students. This figure 6 years on is probably even bigger than that. The article focuses on talking about the increasing numbers of full-time undergraduates in Ireland.

Another very important thing for people to note that are interested in this App is that research shows that shops will be able to give their customers a more personalised experience if they use a loyalty App scheme which is key to building customer loyalty. It says in an article  that I have read about customer loyalty that if you know who your customers are, what they bought and how much they spend, you can give them a more personalised experience. The article tells us about the reasons and benefits to why it is very important to use a loyalty App  for your business.

As this App is called the “Student Saver” and because it is a college App we believe that the people that will get the most benefit out of this App is CIT students.¬†At the moment if you aren’t a CIT student you wont be able to¬†avail¬† of the points accumulating system¬†without ¬†your CIT ¬†student number but you can still download the App to see current offers, deals and events of shops/restaurants etc. Once the App gets up and running we will hopefully be looking into expanding the App into more colleges which will help make the target market even bigger. The video below shows how and why it is vital to communicate with your target audience. This video backs up my point that Apps really are the way forward and are great tools to help communicate with your target audience.

We also feel that the staff and owners of the shops and restaurants in CIT should download the App too because they will need to be Admins on the App to help have the offers and deals constantly up to date. We also feel that any potential businesses that might be interested in advertising their offers, deals and upcoming events on the App should download it also to see how other businesses are advertising on it and also to see how affective and beneficial it will be for them because they would be directly targeting their main target market which is students.

Thank you for reading my blog and feel free to like and share it and as always id love to hear your opinions on anything digital and of course for this blog in particular anything App related.
